Mariannhill massacre suspect killed during shootout

A suspect involved in the Mariannhill massacre, whereby five family members were killed, was fatally wounded while a second managed to escape during a police shootout, yesterday.

Investigations led members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit assisted by KwaNdengezi SAPS to Umbumbulu where police spotted two of the suspects walking along a gravel road.

It is alleged that when police attempted to apprehend the suspects, they opened fire at police officers who retaliated. Police investigations, to arrest the suspect who escaped, continues in earnest.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Langa welcomed the latest development in the investigation. “This gives me hope and shows that the investigation team is not resting. We hope that those who have managed to evade arrest will be arrested soon,” he said.
