Tow truck driver found in possession of radios with police frequency

The items which were seized by police.

A tow truck driver was arrested and charged after he was found in possession of radios with police frequency in the Malvern area, recently. Metro Police officers from the Durban area were conducting patrols in the area when they spotted a tow truck driver, who appeared to be concealing something.

Upon searching the vehicle, the police found a radio using the police frequency. The driver was arrested and charged at Malvern SAPS.

Communications officer of Malvern SAPS, W/O Radhika Marimuthu said that it is unlawful to intercept any police radio communication by use of a scanner or any other means. Those who do are contravening the Electronics Communications Act.

Station commander of Malvern SAPS, Lt Col Valarine Reddy placed emphasis on proactive fighting of crime and the implementation of crime strategies. Police are aware of the misuse of radios to intercept the police frequency. With a zero-tolerance approach, suspects contravening this act will be charged in accordance with the law.
