Hijacker sentenced to 58 years imprisonment

A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 58 years imprisonment after he was convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and escaping from custody, in the Durban Regional Court, last week

The accused, Teddy Dlamini and his co-conspirators preyed on the communities of Havenside and Mobeni Heights in Chatsworth.

Regional spokesman of the Director of Public Prosecutors (DPP) in KZN, Natasha Kara, said from February to August 2016, they targeted elderly people and hijacked them for their cars.

“The victims were also assaulted during the attack. The oldest complainant, a 74-year-old man, was kidnapped and taken with his car to the Lamontville Township.  In this instance, the accused was apprehended but managed to escape from police custody. He was re-arrested in August 2016 when he committed another hijacking,” she added.

In aggravation of sentence, regional court prosecutor, Kuveshni Pillay, handed in a victim impact statement compiled by the complainants wherein they described the trauma they experienced as a result of the attacks. Pillay also led the testimonies of 27 witnesses and expert fingerprint evidence.

Dlamini was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances (three counts taken as one for sentencing), five years imprisonment for kidnapping, 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, five years imprisonment for kidnapping and assault (taken as one for sentencing), five years imprisonment for attempted murder (when he fired shots at the police), there years imprisonment for escaping from custody and 10 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. This results in an effective 58 years imprisonment that the accused will serve.

The Director of Public Prosecutions in KZN, Adv Moipone Noko said, “I trust that a sentence of this nature will assist in combatting the scourge of trio crimes.”
