Suspect shot, arrested following Merebank hijacking

A suspect was arrested and charged after hijacking a car in Merebank on Wednesday. According to a police report, officers were alerted about a shooting in Tomango Road in Merebank.

Police officers attended to the call and on arrival, noticed the suspect lying on the floor. It is alleged that two men approached a woman driving a silver Polo and attacked her while the vehicle was stationary at a traffic light.  The suspects approached her side window which was opened and ordered her out of the car. The men threatened the victim and dragged her out of her car.

Both suspects jumped into the victim’s car and drove off. A police officer the from the Isipingo Vis Carjacking Task Team witnessed the incident as it unfolded and pursued the hijacked vehicle in an unmarked car. A suspect jumped out off the moving vehicle and fired shots at the officers and fled. The second suspect was shot and wounded.

Communications officer of Wentworth SAPS, Cpt Mbuso Gumede, said that the suspect was detained and  taken to King Edward Hospital with a leg wound and is under police guard. “The victim was traumatised and counselling was offered to her. W/O Gama Luthuli and Sgt Chamane were commended by the station commander, Col Van Zyl, for effecting the arrest and recovering the victim’s vehicle. Police officers were not injured. The suspect will be appear in court soon,” said Cpt Gumede.

Cpt Gumede warned motorists to close car windows when approaching the traffic lights as culprits are always looking for opportunities to hijack vehicles at the intersections in Tomango Road. “All valuables  like bags, cellphones, laptops and purses containing cash etc must no be visible. Many smash and grab incidents occur at the robots. Always hide your valuables and be observant,” he said.
