Suspect shot dead, two arrested following Welbedacht business robbery

A business robbery suspect was shot dead while two others were arrested during a shootout in Welbedacht East on Monday evening. According to communications officer of the Chatsworth SAPS, Cpt Cheryl Pillay, the Chatsworth SAPS Task Team responded to a business robbery in the area. It is believed that a foreign national was shot during the crime.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police officers came under attack and returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect. The Durban Flying Squad and Durban International K9 Unit immediately rendered assistance to the police officers. Through the assistance of the community, two suspects were also arrested in a house at Sizabantu Road, Welbedacht East. One suspect, aged 19, was taken to a local hospital where he is under police guard. The other suspect, aged 17, is currently in the holding cells at a local police station,” said Cpt Pillay.

It is alleged that four suspects are still at large and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime. The victim, who was shot, remains in a stable condition at a local hospital. A police vehicle was also damaged during the shooting. Police have intensified their investigations.

Station commander of Chatsworth SAPS, Brig Coenraad Marais commended the task team for their swift response and for placing their lives in danger to apprehend criminals who committed the violent and serious crime.

“The efforts of the task team must be commended as they go beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety of citizens. Chatsworth SAPS appreciates the commitment from the community who have made concerted efforts to assist police in this fight against crime,” he said.

Meanwhile, KZN’s acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa praised the police officers who were brave enough to face the barrel of the gun when confronted by the criminals.

“Our officers were able to survive by using their skills and tactics during the shootout with the criminals in Chatsworth. We have previously warned criminals not to shoot at our police officers but to rather surrender to police when they are approached. Our police officers have been trained to defend themselves when attacked by criminals,” he explained.

According to Maj Gen Langa, police will work around the clock to trace the suspects who are still at large. He also thanked the community for assisting the police and encouraged them to continue working closely with the police in the fight against crime.

A case of robbery and attempted murder was opened at Chatsworth SAPS for further investigation.  The arrested suspects will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon.
