Carjacking victim taken on terror ride to Umlazi

A case of carjacking has been opened after a Malvern man was robbed of his car and taken on a terror ride to Umlazi, recently.

Corporate communications officer of the Malvern SAPS, W/O Radhika Marimuthu said, “He did notice being followed by a vehicle but as he turned into his driveway, the vehicle drove past him in the direction of his neighbour’s property.”

The resident then dismissed the thought of being followed and thought that were his neighbour’s visitors. He entered his driveway and as he alighted the vehicle to his dismay, a suspect was already standing at the driver’s door.

He was threatened with a firearm and forced into the vehicle. As the vehicle moved on, another suspect went through the contents of his wallet and asked him for his pin.

As the vehicle traversed along the road became more bumpy and the resident soon realised that he was in the informal settlements in a dense bushy area.

The suspects stopped the vehicle and ordered him out. They then asked him to run which he did. After a distance he saw a woman who he asked for help. The police were later contacted and it was then ascertained that the suspects had left him in C Section of Umlazi.

The station commander of Malvern SAPS, Lt Col Valarine Reddy stated that patrols have been upped in the area and strategic action plans have been put into place taking into account the crime trends and patterns.
