Isipingo business owner assaulted by armed hijackers

A 55-year-old business owner is still recovering in Kingsway Hospital after he was brutally assaulted on the head by three armed men who had hijacked him in Isipingo Rail on Wednesday evening.

Owner of Roops General Dealer and father, Roy Roops, said he was closing up his store at the corner of Bally and Inwabi Road, when he was approached by unknown males.

“While walking towards my vehicle, I noticed three armed men approaching me with guns in their hands. I rushed to my car to avoid being hurt but instead they had cornered me. The suspects demanded the keys to the vehicle, which I refused to hand over. The men started to assault me by hitting me several times in the head with the gun. After the ordeal, they fled the scene in my vehicle,” he said.

Roops added that he was bleeding profusely and was helpless made his way to a nearby shop, where a business owner assisted him. The man was transported to Kingsway Hospital and had sustained major injuries to his head. He received 15 stitches to his head and has been left traumatised after the robbery.

Isipingo Business Forum chairman, Junaid Iqbal, said, “Business owners are urged to beef up security and to take note of suspicious suspects and vehicles lurking in the vicinity. Please contact security service provider or the police for further assistance,” he said.
