Significance of Father’s Day

A Father’s Day celebration was first held at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Dodd’s father, civil war veteran, William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised six children.

Dodd was a member of the Old Centenary Presbyterian Church which is now known as the Knox Presbyterian Church where she first proposed the idea of a celebration to remember fathers.

Dodd approached her pastor and suggested that fathers should have a holiday similar to Mother’s Day to honour them. After her late approach on June 5, local clergymen accepted the idea and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June.

Today, Father’s Day is a worldwide celebration that honours fathers and celebrates all the aspects of fatherhood. This day remembers and recognises the importance of fathers in the lives of children. The day, which is celebrated in various globes on different dates, never fails to bring together fathers and their children.
