Security guard robbed of cash box outside Chatsworth Post Office

Armed robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money after they held up a cash-in-transit security guard outside the Chatsworth Post Office, at about 2:45pm, yesterday.

Manager of the post office, Maria Mkabela, said she is thankful that no one was injured during the robbery. “The security guard collected the money from the post office and signed for everything. While he was walking back to the security vehicle, he was accosted by armed men who disarmed him and fled with the cash box. They fled in a grey getaway vehicle which was parked and waiting nearby,” explained Mkabela.

Communications officer of the Chatsworth SAPS, Cpt Cheryl Pillay, confirmed the incident and said, “According to reports at the Chatsworth SAPS, it is alleged that the guard was walking towards the cash-in-transit vehicle when he was held at gunpoint by two armed suspects. The guard was deprived of a money box containing cash and cheques. The guard did not sustain any injuries and the suspects fled in a vehicle.” A case of business robbery was opened and investigators are appealing for witnesses to contact the Chatsworth SAPS on 031 451-4310/ 4280/ 4372.
