Hijacked vehicle recovered in Umlazi, suspect fatally shot

Investigations are continuing after a hijacked vehicle was recovered in the Umlazi area, recently. It is believed that one of the suspects was also fatally shot. Charges of inquest and attempted murder are being investigated by the Umlazi SAPS.

It is alleged that at 6:20pm along Price Mcwayizeni Road, V Section, members of the K9 Unit were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious silver Ford Fiesta. The officers conducted an investigation and it was established that the vehicle was hijacked in the Umbilo area.

Officers pursued the hijacked vehicle and the occupants fired shots at them. Police officers returned fire and the hijacked vehicle came to a standstill near an informal settlement. The body of the driver was found inside the hijacked vehicle with a gunshot wound to the neck. IPID was informed of the incident. Two of the passengers managed to flee on foot towards the informal settlement and police have launched a manhunt for them.

KwaZulu-Natal’s acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa commended the swift response of the police officers and the recovery of the hijacked vehicle. “The police will defend themselves when under attack. The team will ensure that the suspects who fled the scene after the incident are locked behind bars,” he said.
