Suspect arrested for Welbedacht resident’s murder

A 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday following the murder of a 23-year-old Welbedacht resident who was breaking fruit from a tree in Violet Lane, in Crossmoor, on February 22.

According to communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South Cluster team, Priya Nunkumar, the firearm which was used in the crime was also recovered.

“A joint operation by the eThekwini Inner South Cluster Intelligence Unit, the eThekwini Inner South Task Team and the Durban K9 Unit led to the recovery of a licenced 9mm Luger and 14 live rounds of ammunition. The weapon was confirmed to have been used by the suspect when he allegedly fired shots at the victim, who was breaking fruit from the suspect’s tree,” she added.

The victim sustained injuries to his head, however, when the victim had been examined by doctors at RK Khan Hospital, it was discovered that the victim had a projectile on his head from a gunshot.

“The victim was admitted in hospital and died later that week. A case of murder was opened at the Chatsworth SAPS and was being investigated by detectives, when a witness came forward and linked the suspect to the shooting which occurred. The suspect has been detained at the Chatsworth SAPS and will appear in Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon,” she further stated.

The eThekwini Inner South Cluster commander, Maj Gen Nunkumar, commended police officers for their swift reaction in apprehending the wanted suspect.

“We will be leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the victim’s family receive justice for the loss of their loved one,” he said.
