Letter to the editor: Celebrating women of our community

The cast of the movie shined at the event.

In keeping with International Women’s Month, I would like to take this opportunity in highlighting the sterling work that women who represent the arts are doing.

With the recent release of the first major movie that highlights the the Indian community at large, I would like to extend my congratulations and best wishes to the cast and crew of the movie ‘Keeping up with the Kandasamys.’

The movie is having a phenomenal run at the box office, a first for an Indian production in South Africa. Once again, well done to all the role-players in the movie, however special mention must be made to the women of the production, director Jayan Moodley, actors Jailoshnie Naidoo aka ‘Aunty Rumba’, Maheshnie Naicker, Mariam Bassa and the beautiful Mishqah Parthiephal who will soon have international film makers knocking at her door.

How wonderful it is to know that the South African film industry for the Indian community has finally come of age? We have many women who are strong, confident and successful in the various genres of the performing arts in our community. The likes of Krijay Govender, Leeanda Reddy, Kamscilla Naidoo, Samantha Govender, Shika Bhudoo,  Derosha Moodley, Kajal Maharaj, Kajal Bhagwandeen just to name a few.

On the comedy front, we have very talented Anastasia Govender aka ‘Annalaksmi’, who is wowing audiences with her parodies all over the country. To all these amazingly talented women you are all role models to the next generation of artistes, keep up the good work and thank you for making the Indian community in South Africa proud.
