Team up and get active

With just over a month to go, excitement is mounting for the Rising Sun Chatsworth Freedom Marathon. Pre-enter your team online at and head down to the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday, April 23 for a day filled with adrenalin and enthusiasm. Seen are some staff of the Rising Sun Community Newspapers who are geared up for the 10km walk/run, which they will be using as a platform for team building. Other business houses are also encouraged to participate in the race together and make it a team building exercise. Your team can either participate in a 52km run, 21km run and 10km walk/run.

The prestigious ultra-Chatsworth  Freedom Marathon , now called the Rising Sun Chatsworth Freedom Marathon, owing to the race being sponsored by the media house -The Rising Sun, will take place on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from the Chatsworth Stadium commencing at 5:30am in the morning. There will be three race events starting off more or less the same time and they are the 52 km ultra-marathon; the 21km run and the 10km run/walk event.

A field of over 3000 runners and walkers are expected to converge from all parts of SA on race day, some who travel from far and wide will be spending the night at the stadium and it has been the policy of the club to make these runners as comfortable as possible.

It is hoped that all residents who are fortunate to have the race run along their roads, will be up, bright and early to show them the Chatsworth hospitality. Any form of help, entertainment and assistance is welcomed as long as the runners are not impeded in any way.

This is one of the biggest events in the Chatsworth calendar and because it starts so early in the morning the gigantic heart of Chatsworth is still in deep slumber. But if you can diarise the date and time, you will witness one of the most marvellous spectacles of man’s endurance against time and the terrain of Chatsworth. Your cheers, applause and encouraging sentiments will boost the tired legs of these runners to perform better.

The previous 25km race has now been converted to a 21km race which we hope will encourage the young aspirant runner to try out this much easier distance. The 21km race is within the reach of many joggers and casual runners who just need a challenge such as this to set them off on serious running, and maybe the Comrades Marathon someday.

For the first time, a 10km run/walk event has been included in this glittering gathering of runners from all over the country. This is to draw mothers from the kitchen, dads from their Sunday papers and the teenagers from their hi-tech cellphones and other forms of technological gadgets. The club and the sponsors are plunging huge sums of money to conscientize the community of Chatsworth and SA to participate in an event that is of tremendous importance in improving one’s lifestyle and to embrace a tradition of healthy living.

There are ample watering tables, paramedics, marshalls, police and club officials who will render assistance along the way. Beautiful T-shirts and many other goodies will be given out to all participants. Let Sunday, April 23, 2017 usher in a new change in your life. Take a chance and do the 10km run/walk- you will never regret it!

Finally, members of the club would like to thank their sponsors- Vijay Maharaj, the CEO of Rising Sun Newspapers, and his management team for sponsoring this massive race.
