VIDEO: Police probe Chatsworth hijacking

The Chatsworth SAPS is working around the clock to apprehend suspects, who hijacked a 42-year-old Crossmoor woman, outside her garage, recently.

Since the incident, CCTV footage, which was recorded by a neighbour’s camera, has gone viral on social media sparking anger and fury among residents of Chatsworth.

Communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South Cluster, Priya Nunkumar, “The victim was parked outside her home in Chatsworth on Monday, January 16, 2017 when she was approached by an armed hijacker, who pointed a firearm at her. She was ordered to get out of her Hyundai i10. The hijackers arrived in a grey Toyota Yaris.”

The fearful victim jumped out of the passenger’s seat and ran straight into her garage to seek refuge. She had realised that her house keys were still in her vehicle and to avoid further invasion by her hijackers, she attempted to go back and grab her keys from the vehicle, which caused the hijacker to aggressively flee with the victim’s car.

The CCTV footage which was recorded from a neighbour’s camera was later released on social media. A case of hijacking has been opened at Chatsworth SAPS and police will be investigating further.

The eThekwini Inner South Cluster commander, Maj Gen Nunkumar stated that members of the Chatsworth SAPS will work around the clock to ensure that the hijackers are apprehended. “We will be having a zero-tolerance approach to all hijackers within the eThekwini Inner South area,” he said.
