Help Deepa recover

Deepa is in a critical condition.

The family of an Isipingo medical student who is fighting for her life in hospital is appealing to members of the community to assist them in raising funds for her recovery.

Nineteen-year-old Deepa Karuna Sooknandan who was studying medicine at a medical university in China fell from the fifth floor of her residence building, last December. The left side of her jaw, pelvis and ankle are fractured and she has a contraption holding her hip, ankle bone and pelvis together.

The bubbly and energetic teenager was meant to return to South Africa on December 31 to spend the holidays with her family, but sadly did not make it as she had fallen a few days earlier.

Sooknandan had her life planned out and was determined to follow in the footsteps of her father and become a doctor. She had applied to study at a medical school in KZN but was turned down. She decided to spread her wings and study in China.

The family who reside in Isipingo has contacted the South African Embassy to assist in the matter and is yet to hear from them. At the moment hospital bills are overwhelming, the bill is currently +/- R500,000.00 and increasing daily.

She requires surgery, but the hospital can only resume her treatment once the bill has been settled. The family appeal to any organisation, company or firm to kindly assist with finances to aid in Deepa’s recovery.
