Operation Fiyela sweeps through Chatsworth

The men and women in blue who participated in the intelligence-driven operation.

Operation Fiyela extended its scope to Chatsworth when Operational Commander, Colonel Trevor Small of Chatsworth SAPS together with approximately 80 police officers including the SAPS KZN Provincial Task Team, SANDF, Durban LCRC and SARS joined forces in an intelligence driven operation sweeping through the local vicinity on Wednesday at about 3pm.

The operation commenced with crime prevention duties targeting drug dens in Chatsworth. One suspect aged 50 was arrested in Alpine Drive, Shallcross. Police seized 26 mandrax tablets, 23 pieces of cocaine and R15, 850 in cash. The estimated street value of the drugs is R4, 000. The accused, Ashwin Singh, appeared at the Chatsworth Magistrates Court and was granted bail of R5, 000. In total eight arrests were effected for drugs. There was one arrest with regard to the ‘Dangerous Weapon Act’ as well.

Members of the SANDF cordoned off the Lusaka Informal Settlement allowing police officers to conduct a search at the settlement at 9pm. Police arrested two foreigners from Lesotho with their two children. The operation terminated at midnight.

Chatsworth SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Keerith Nunkumar, said, “These operations will send a message to criminals that police will not tolerate errant behaviour and police have adopted a zero tolerance approach. I want the communities in the Chatsworth Cluster to feel safe and I encourage communities to join the SAPS in this fight against crime. The success of the operation was due to the partnerships, effective strategies, proper planning and a focused and intelligence led approach.”

Brigadier Nunkumar extended his appreciation to the dedicated men and women in blue who worked through the night to ensure the safety of the community of Chatsworth.
