The Rotary Club of Durban-Merewent is a non-profit organisation that aims to provide humanitarian services to the community.
They are a group of vibrant people from Merebank, who are committed to assist and make a difference wherever they can.
This year, the members of the Rotary Club of Durban-Merewent chose to become a ‘Cupcake Angels’. They believe that this is one of the sweetest ways to save a life.
The event, Cupcakes for Children with Cancer was held at the Merebank Shopping Centre.
This was a successful event supported by all, young and old. Merebank was a suburb surrounded by a sea of industries. Residents of Merebank are no strangers to diseases caused by pollution especially cancer.
Celebrities such as DJ Devan from Megazone, comedian, Bash with Tash and Kidz Rock were personally involved with activities of the day.
A total of 1000 cupcakes were sold and a sum of R10, 000 was raised. Proceeds from this event went towards an NGO, Cupcake of Hope.
This NGO raises awareness of childhood cancer and raises funds for children with cancer who are in need of medical and financial assistance.
Co-ordinator of the event, Rotarian Melissa Siniselloo said, “This is just the beginning. Cupcake for children with cancer is to be an annual event. Just as Rotary International has achieved so much in the eradication of Polio, we hope that cancer too will soon be a thing of the past, as the Rotary Club hope to assist in whatever way we can to find a cure cancer.”
