A man, who was accosted by armed men during a robbery, can breathe a little sigh of relief after one of the accused arrested in the matter was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, recently.
While on his way to work, walking along Basil February Road, the victim was attacked.
The complainant said the assailants assaulted him and robbed him at knifepoint.
The known accused robbed him of his cellphone, a Samsung J1, valued at R1, 800 while another suspect robbed him of his gold chain.
A case of robbery was opened by the victim at Wentworth SAPS. The suspect, who was known as ‘Bullet’, was arrested and detained at the police station.
Communications officer of Wentworth SAPS, Cpt Mbuso Gumede, said, “The case docket was assigned to Det W/O Walter Marais who then through his informer network, was able to recover the complainant’s cellphone and the suspect was positively identified by the complainant. The suspect was charged for robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, and refused to divulge any other information.”
The matter was set for trial in the Durban Magistrate’s Court and the accused was found guilty and sentenced to effectively 12 years for robbery.
The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Det W/O Marais through his hard work, dedication and experience in the investigation field secured this conviction.
Station management applauded him for ensuring that another criminal is kept away from society.
