Elderly man and women arrested in Sunset Avenue drug bust

After receiving numerous complaints from the community of Woodhurst regarding illicit drug activity, more than R100, 000 worth of drugs was confiscated in an intelligence-driven pre-dawn operation in Sunset Avenue, on Friday.

A 60-year-old man and two women, aged 48 and 55, will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court, today.

The joint operation, conducted by Durban Metro Police, the Multi Operational Response Task Team, MORT Crime Prevention, the eThekwini Inner and Outer West Crime Intelligence Units and the National Intervention Unit, reeled in three arrests after three homes in the flats area were raided simultaneously.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbele said a total of 2765 capsules of heroin, 143 mandrax tablets, 48 pieces of rock cocaine and R10, 081 cash with 2, 1 kilograms of dagga were seized.

The 55-year-old suspect was found with 2517 capsules of heroin and 133 mandrax tablets while the 60-year-old suspect had a consignment of 248 capsules of heroin, 48 pieces of rock cocaine, ten mandrax tablets and cash suspected to be the proceeds of drug trade.

The 48-year-old suspect was arrested for drug dealing after she was found selling 2, 1 kilograms of dagga with an estimated value of more than R10, 000.

Operational commander of the Multi Operational Response Task Team, Rapid Response and Crime Prevention, Supt Rosh Prem, said he is thankful to residents, who are blowing the whistle on illicit drug activity.

“We look forward to working with the community. Assistance from the community is vital for successes such as these. The hard work of our officers is commendable and we urge residents to continue to work with police to rid the community of drugs,” added Supt Prem.

Col Mbele explained that the operations will continue throughout the area to root-out the proliferation of drugs, which contribute to serious and violent crimes.
