Lotus Park teenager, 16-year-old Portia Akhona Mkhize is excited to be one of the finalists in the Miss Teen South Africa Globe Pageant.
Mkhize said that ever since she was young, it has been her dream to be a model. She started modelling when she was young, but she said she stopped at a certain stage.
Mkhize returned to the runway in 2014. Since then she has achieved 10 titles, among them she was named the first princess in Miss Teen Amanzimtoti, Miss Charity KZN South Africa 2018, KZN Ambassador and Miss Cultural Diversity 2018.
The person, who inspired her to enter the pageant, was her mother. She saw a post on Facebook that there will be auditions in Durban.
The beauty with brains went for auditions and was eventually chosen as one of the finalists.
The pageant has 26 girls from different provinces. Portia’s mom has been supporting her journey since day one.
Mkhize said, “If I win the competition, I would change a lot of things in my community. Firstly, I would open my own modelling school where all girls/boys would participate there instead of them being committed into other things like drugs and alcohol. In my area, there is a very high rate of teenage pregnancy. I would like to motivate young women with inspirational talks. I think that I should win the competition because of my confidentiality, and one of the prices in this competition is a trip overseas to represent South Africa. I think that I would proudly represent my country very well.”
The talented beauty said she loves reading fashion magazines in her spare time.
“I could spend the whole day just reading fashion magazines. I also enjoy playing netball and and teaching young girls to model,” she said.
