While other communities were coming together in a bid to clean up their communities as part of Clean-up and Recycle Week SA, Merebank residents are battling with illegal dumping in their community.
An illegal dumping site, located on the corner of Juggernaut and Sambalpur Road, has become an eyesore in the community.
People have gone so far as digging a hole in the park and throwing their rubbish in it.
“Due to illegal dumping, there are rodents as big as cats breeding, filth and the area is also attracting vagrants who we cannot identify as criminals in disguise. Health hazards arise from rotting waste that causes airborne bacterial pollution. These are the reasons for so many bacterial illnesses. We as the Urmakot Juggernaut Safety Committee would like our community to be kept clean and crime free for our children and the next generation. Let us lead by example for other communities to follow and we can build an eco friendly environment,” said the committee members.

“One of the dangers of illegal dumping is that grime attracts crime and recently suspicious individuals have been lurking around, pretending to be sifting through the dirt but are actually watching the school children on their way to and from school. Anyone caught will definitely face prosecution,” said Vinodh Kanaipersad, chairman of the committee.
Members said that there is going to be a huge fine for anyone caught dumping illegally.
Kanaipersad added that there were no issues with DSW and the truck still comes to pick up the rubbish bags.
“We cleaned up the area last year and then the dumping started again about 6-8 months ago,” he said.
Kanaipersad urged community members to refrain from giving their rubbish bags to vagrants who say they will throw it away for them.
