The trial of Sipho Thabi Memza (39) and Baldin Nthokozisis Gumede (40) ended at the Durban Regional Court with both accused receiving a sentence of 31 years imprisonment for robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder, recently.
The conviction is due to the stellar investigation conducted by Det Sgt Mzwakhe Joseph Jwara from Chatsworth SAPS.
Communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South cluster, Cpt Cheryl Pillay said on March 19, 2017, a man requested the services of a metered taxi service from South Coast Road in Mobeni to Savannah Park.
Upon arrival at a garage in Savannah Park, the client accosted the driver of the taxi demanding his cellphone and wallet.
At the garage, he was approached by other suspects, who were awaiting the arrival of the taxi.
One of the suspects went into the bank to withdraw money from the driver’s bank account while the other suspects drove to an isolated area in Mariannhill where the driver was stabbed and pushed out of the moving vehicle.
The victim managed to stop a passer-by who rendered assistance. The next day, the suspects were arrested by police and placed before the criminal justice system.
Acting cluster commander of the eThekwini Inner South cluster, Maj Gen Chirwa, commended Det Sgt Mjwara for his commitment and hard work.
“The professional gathering of information by the investigating officers ensured that no impunity is granted to the perpetrators of heinous and brutal crimes. The Chatsworth SAPS is committed towards ensuring that all investigations are prioritised and perpetrators and placed before the court,” added Maj Gen Chirwa.
