In an effort to sustain the environment, while educating and empowering pupils, the South Durban Basin ABM in partnership with several other organisations embarked on the Protect and Preserve Environment Art Competition, recently.
Alencon Primary School, Earth Organisation, Imagine Durban, Parks, Safer Cities, DSW, Communications and the Civics Federation ran the project.
A glittering awards ceremony was held recently at Alencon Primary School to announce the winners in each grade.
The principal of Alencon Primary School, Mr A Pillay said that the pupils have shown keen interest in the project and have enthusiastically participated in the competition. The initiative created much-needed awareness among pupils to protect and preserve the environment in which they live.
The project has motivated pupils to protect their environment as well as to spread this awareness to the community at large to maintain clean, healthy and beautiful open spaces.
Pupils were awarded with certificates and trophies for their participation and showing outstanding talent in the art competition.
Yvette Taylor from Earth Organisation explained that the pupils were inspired and received intensive knowledge with regards to protecting the environment.
The SDB ABM project leader, Irene Chetty said that their aim was to educate and empower pupils in regards to sustaining and protecting the environment.
“Every pupil had an opportunity to be creative and showcase their talents in the form of artwork. We are pleased with the standard of excellence we received from all pupils for this amazing competition. We are positive that this project has made huge difference in the lives of our pupils,” she said.
Members of the organisation wish to thank Parks Department for their creativity in beautifying the venue and all sponsors and role-players who contributed towards the successful initiative.
