Chants of ‘Justice for Matthew’ were echoed by an infuriated crowd during a protest that was held following the suicide of a 17-year-old Chatsworth Secondary School pupil.
The protest took place outside the school, situated in Bayview. Matthew David was found hanged in the kitchen of his Westcliff home following a school disciplinary hearing, during which he was reportedly referred to as a ‘pervert and gay’.
At the protest, family, friends and residents showed their solidarity by displaying placards.
The protesters also handed over a memorandum to the school, which detailed several issues that the Department of Education needed to address.
The memorandum stated, “Our committee calls for an immediate independent enquiry which led to the loss of life of Matthew David.”
