Land grabbers allegedly set fire to the nursery lecture hall, situated within the Silverglen Nature Reserve, last week.
The nursery is an internationally recognised indigenous medicinal plant nursery. A R1, 000 cash reward is being offered to any person with information that can lead to a successful arrest and conviction of the perpetrator/s involved in the crime.
Silverglen Conservancy chairman, Shaun Hammond, said that a case of arson has been opened.
“The nature reserve has just been proclaimed by the Department of Environmental Affairs meaning that all the laws, which protect game reserves such as the Kruger National Park and all KZN Wildlife Parks will be enforced at the Silverglen Nature Reserve,” he said.
According to Hammond, even if shacks are erected in the reserve, the invaders will be charged and the shacks will be broken down.
“The reserve is now protected by the National Environmental Management Act and the National Environmental Biodiversity Act. It is also protected by the Forestry Act of 1998. This is the only reserve that has been proclaimed in the Chatsworth area,” he added.
