Health MEC offers condolences to Gumede family

The late Ms Cacisile Gumede, who was gunned down by the builder.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, offered his deepest sympathies to the family of Ms Cacisile Gumede (34), a data capturer from Msunduzi Clinic in Cato Ridge, who was allegedly shot dead, following a dispute.

In a video that has sent shockwaves on social media, Mozambican builder, Sdu Sitole, was filmed on a street in Umlazi in an apparently dazed state, firing his gun indiscriminately in public before putting it to his head and shooting himself. He collapsed and died.

It is believed that this was just hours after he had shot Ms Gumede, the night before, at her Cato Ridge home. Sitole had for some time been building a house for the now-deceased data capturer, but there are scant details as to what could have led to the shooting.

Ms Gumede, a mother of two children, aged 12 and seven, was with her sister and a one of her colleagues at home when she was shot.

Ms Gumede’s colleagues and management of Msunduzi Clinic are shocked by the incident. They have described her as a dedicated and hardworking member of the team.

“She was a kind and quiet person, but flexible and easy to work with. She had very good communication skills and would not hesitate to call you to order if she felt you were straying from the path,” said a colleague who asked not to be named.

Reacting to the incident, MEC Dhlomo said, “We are shocked and extremely saddened by this incident, which comes at a time when our premier, Mr Willies Mchunu is spearheading a series of prayers around the province to ask for divine intervention to put an end to social ills, including the murder of innocent and defenseless women. Since July is Men’s Month, we are also highlighting the need for men to take action against women abuse. We wish to offer our deepest condolences to Ms Gumede’s family, colleagues and friends and, of course the family of the perpetrator, whom we are told is from Mozambique, because a sudden and unexpected tragedy such as this one must be devastating for both sides.”
