WATCH: Cases of culpable homicide, public violence under investigation following Link Road protest

Link Road was temporarily closed due to the public violence.

Chatsworth SAPS is investigating a case of culpable homicide and public violence after a five-year-old girl was knocked dead by a motorist on Link Road on Sunday, inciting anger among residents at the informal settlement, who then disrupted the flow of traffic by hurling stones at passing motorists.

In addition to this, the disgruntled locals also burnt a boat.

Cluster communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South, Cpt Cheryl Pillay said, “It is alleged that the child was walking alone across the road when she was knocked. The angry residents from the Bottlebrush Informal Settlement then hurled stones at the passing motorists and burnt a boat on the road, disrupting the flow of traffic.”

According to Cpt Pillay, when police officers arrived at the scene, their vehicles were also stoned. “The Public Order Policing Unit stabilised the scene and continued to monitor the area. Police vehicles were damaged during this public violence,” she added.

Link Road was temporary closed with the Metropolitan Police assisting with controlling of vehicles into Shallcross, however, it was reopened earlier this morning.

Chairman of the Shallcross Community Policing Forum, Mahendra Lillkan said, “Informal settlement residents need to be educated on road safety as a way to prevent future incidents of this nature. This is also not the first time a situation like this occurred.”

Pillay said that speed calming measures in this area will be a danger to motorists especially at night.

“We are thankful for the support that we received from the Moorton CPF, Crossmoor CPF, Montford CPF, Westcliff CPF and the Pinetown Protection Services, who all came out in their numbers to assist. The Shallcross Patrollers is a group of dedicated residents who volunteer their time and resources for the safety of our community. They are on patrol seven nights a week although all have work the next day. They stood off at the scene till after midnight. We would love for more residents to come on board with us in order to keep homes and loved ones safe,” he added.

Acting cluster commander of the eThekwini Inner South, Maj Gen Mandlenkosi Chirwa also issued a stern warning to residents who take the law into their own hands.

“Criminals who incite violence will be arrested by police and face the full might of the law. Police are appreciative of the sector forums that assisted police at the scene. I thank God that the men and women in blue were not injured during this incident,” he added.
