Communications officer of Malvern SAPS, W/O Radhika Marimuthu, said the PRASA employees were conducting random checks in the Malvern area when they came across the man with cable wire in his possession.

“The suspect could not adequately explain as to where he had obtained the cable wire from. The PRASA officials took him to Malvern SAPS, where he was arrested and charged for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen and detained,” she said.

According to W/O Marimuthu, he will appear in court as the offence falls within the ambit of destruction of state property and does not merit police bail.

“According to the Criminal Law Amendment Act, this act purports the destruction of state property, hence suspects in this regard do not have the liberty of police bail and have to appear before court,” she added.
