Investigations are continuing after Malvern SAPS apprehended officials from the eThekwini Municipality’s electricity department for corruption, recently. According to police reports, the officials proceeded to a house in Malvern to disconnect their electricity, last week.
Communications officer of Malvern SAPS, W/O Radhika Marimuthu said, “The homeowner inquired as to the reason for their presence. The officials then told the homeowner that they would not disconnect the electricity if an amount of R5000, 00 was handed to them.”
The homeowner contacted Malvern SAPS, who mobilised the various units into action. A sting operation was then set up by the police officers and the officials were arrested and charged for corruption.

They were remanded in police custody. Members of the community are cautioned to be on their guard, when they are approached by corrupt officials. They should contact their local police immediately. Every state official works within a mandate, which does not include corruption on any level.
All state officials are remunerated for their job performance and soliciting monies from the community is definitely a no-go zone. Acting station commander of Malvern SAPS, Cpt SN Khambula said that they have a zero-tolerance policy to all crimes and criminals and anyone violating same will be dealt with according to the prescripts of the law.
