A case against a man arrested for the attempted kidnapping of a five-year-old preschool pupil, was withdrawn by the Chatsworth Magistrates Court after the 25-year-old accused was certified as a mental patient, on Monday.
Communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South Cluster, Cpt J Pillay said, “The alertness and swift response from a parent at a school in Chatsworth has led to the arrest of a suspect for an alleged kidnapping. It is alleged that on Thursday, 25 January 2018, a five-year-old primary school child was accosted by the suspect, who began pulling the child away from a family member. The family member managed to rescue the child and the suspect was arrested.”
The case was investigated by the eThekwini Inner South Cluster Family, Child and Sexual Offences Unit who prioritised this investigation. The case against the accused was withdrawn.
Police are advising parents to educate their children regarding strangers who approach them at their schools. Children should not speak to strangers or accept any gift from them either.
Children attending primary school are unable to ward off their possible attackers therefore police advice that pupils walk in groups.
