Carjacker swiftly nabbed in Croftdene

The suspect who was arrested by the super-sleuth police officers.

The eThekwini Inner South Cluster Trio Crime Unit foiled a hijacking duo’s plans after the team pounced on one of the suspects during the carjacking in Tranquil Street in Croftdene, on Friday night.

The Trio Crime Unit was patrolling the Chatsworth area, when they noticed two men, one armed with a toy firearm, forcing a woman out of a black Audi.

Communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South cluster, Priya Nunkumar said members reacted swiftly, pouncing on one of the suspects, aged 21, however, the second suspect fled the scene.

“The 24-year-old victim, who was alone in the vehicle, which was parked outside a pharmacy, was approached by the two suspects, who attempted to force her out of her vehicle. The victim, who was battered and bruised related the incident to police officers of how the suspects fought with her for her cellphone and car keys. The traumatised victim expressed her disappointment in witnesses, including a local security guard, who she claims just stood by and watched the entire incident happen,” added Nunkumar.

The 21-year-old suspect was charged for attempted carjacking. The suspect will appear in Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon. Commander of the eThekwini Inner South cluster, Maj Gen Nunkumar, commended members on their excellent work in nabbing the carjacking suspect.

“Our officers will be working around the clock to link the suspect to various other crimes in the area, as well as link the suspect to other hijacking suspects within the eThekwini Inner South area,” he said.
