Civic association spearheads clean-up initiative in Silverglen

Civic association members and residents who were part of the successful initiative.

The streets of Silverglen were left neat and tidy after members of the Silverglen Civic Association held a clean-up initiative as part of their Mandela Day programme, recently. Almost 300 bags of litter and rubbish were collected, bagged and removed from the community.

President of the Silverglen Civic Association, Eddie Govender said that the organisation must applaud the dedicated band of civic members, who, along with their spouses and families did a sterling job with the clean-up.

“They gave up valuable family time and assisted with their own resources. This alone tells you the scant regard residents have come to treat the environment with, in our once beautiful suburb. You only have to clean the verge outside your property to make a difference. If each property owner takes responsibility for his/ her verge, Silverglen can regain its status as an elite suburb it once was in no time,” he said.

Durban Solid Waste, Sharen Kistanasamy, Chatsworth Parks Gardens, members of the eThekwini Safer Cities Department, Mona Edries and Kamini Pillai also assisted greatly and contributed to the success of the event.

“Parents, schools and business houses need to play a more meaningful role in creating the awareness when it comes to littering and the environment.  By-laws should be enforced to fine those who litter and dump garbage on the verges and side-walks.  I wish to thank all participants.  Like the great Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’.  We have only one planet and it is our responsibility to protect and preserve it for future generations. Let’s make everyday a Mandela day,” added Govender.
