Fishermen fight for their rights

Fishermen from different areas walking together.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), together with the KwaZulu-Natal Subsistence Fishermen’s Forum, conducted a fishermen’s walk on Durban’s beachfront, last Saturday.

The walk was held for a number of reasons, which included opposing oil and gas exploration activities that have been proposed for the Indian Ocean, the opening of piers, traditional fishing grounds and the harbour for fishing which had been previously opened but have since been closed off to subsistence fisherfolk.

Other reasons included the re-opening of the passenger train that was used to transport poor subsistence fisherfolk to the West Station on the Bluff and to the deep water access that the South Pier provides, to oppose the harassment that subsistence fisherfolk are facing daily from port security and the SAPS, and to oppose fishing rights allocated to Japanese and Chinese fishing trawlers that are allowed to fish in South African water.

The walk was well attended as over 300 fishermen from various communities such as Phoenix, Chatsworth, Wentworth, Umkomaas, Sydenham, Merebank, South Pier, South Beach, Durban North, Mayville, Marianhill, Reservoir Hills, Amanzimtoti, Overport, and other fishing communities in Durban, participated in the march.

The Durban promenade was full of beach-goers, surfers, bathers, and the elite, therefore they were able to see the plight of subsistence fisherfolk firsthand.
