Carjacker sentenced to 45 years behind bars

Sphelele Ndlovu is serving his sentence at the Westville Prison.

Carjacking accused, Sphelele Ndlovu faced the full wrath of the law after he was sentenced to 45 years behind bars, recently. He was convicted after Det Cnst Sphakanyiswa Bhengu of the Chatsworth SAPS conducted a sterling investigation.

Ndlovu (26) appeared in the Durban Regional Court and was found guilty on three counts of carjacking. Communications officer of the Chatsworth SAPS, Cpt Cheryl Pillay said that the accused had committed three carjackings in the Chatsworth policing precinct, in 2014.

“During the early hours of the morning, the accused committed a carjacking on Road 747, Montford where he stole the complainant’s VW Polo. Police recovered the carjacked vehicle together with a Norinco pistol. Through the assistance of crime scene experts, fingerprints were obtained and positively linked to the accused,” she said.

Det Cnst Bhengu together with investigators proceeded to the accused’s home in Claremont where they arrested him, in 2015. The accused was positively identified during an identification parade. He is  currently serving his sentence at the Westville Prison.

Acting station commander of the Chatsworth SAPS, Col Krish Nair commended the investigator on the successful conviction and welcomed the sentence meted out by the Department of Justice.

Chatsworth SAPS is urging drivers not to park their vehicles on their driveways and pavements. Due to the environmental design of properties, owners park their vehicles on the pavements. Police advise that owners take precaution and use devices to secure the vehicle. “Criminals are opportunists who will pounce on vulnerable and unsuspecting drivers,” added Cpt Pillay.
