WATCH: New talent takes off

Sanvir Dewchand is seen during his performance at the King Shaka International Airport.

Sarnia resident, Sanvir Dewchand (25) became known as the ‘Airport Sensation’ after a video of him playing a melodious tune on a piano at 6am at King Shaka International Airport was posted on social media by his brother.

The clip quickly went viral gaining the former Wingen Heights Secondary pupil more than 45, 000 views.  Dewchand who never intended to become famous but rather hoped to share his love for music said, “As a South African musician, I never expect to get such support and motivation from the community. Today, I have realised the real power of music. I have always regarded music as my religion through life. Music is one thing that has never failed me, never given me sadness, but yet gave me a whole lot of love, joy, a reason to live, smile and look forward to life every day.”

He added, “I feel overwhelmed at the response from the community, and that how as a musician, I am able to grow, reach greater heights and also be able to share something with you all, that I dearly love and have a passion for. I feel that I would be able to share the love for music with everyone around me more than ever. I never expected this and didn’t realise what this would turn out to be.”

The young lad who also is a drummer, keyboardist, producer, composer, and a sound engineer, released his debut single called ‘Gora Gora Tanwa’ when he was seven-years-old.  The song is still played on Radio Hindvani to this day.

The former Mariannhill resident also recalled his musical journey. “As a child, I grew up in a musical family and therefore music was a major part of my life. Over the years, I have realised that I have a very keen interest in music and began further learning from my dad, Surend Dewchand, as well as other tutors,” he said.

“I love Hindi music made in the 90s. Some of my favourite albums include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Ghulam. Through the years of having the privilege of performing at many concerts, I got the opportunity to meeting a lot of international artists personally including Sonu Nigam, Javed Ali and Bappi Lahiri.  I have also had the opportunity to perform on the same stage with them and backed them as a drummer.  I am currently the youngest member of the Bollywod Showband and I am the owner of A band called ‘San Productions’ as well.  I perform at major fairs around South Africa and at concerts. I love performing live as it gives me the chance to share the passion with others,” the musician added.

He has also created a fan page where he will be posting videos, new releases and more about his music life and hopes that the community will continue supporting local talent.

“We have the power and ability to support each other and create a better music industry. There is a growing amount of upcoming young talent and with the support of all South Africans, we can reach greater heights, irrespective of our race, age, gender, or religion,” added the passionate musician.

Dewchand also enjoys listening to music, cooking and watching live music shows and is currently in the process of building his dream recording studio.
