Second phase of #WarOnLeaks programme officially launched

The Water and Sanitation minister, Nomvula Mokonyane officially launched the second phase of the #WarOnLeaks programme in the province, recently.

Speaking at the event, she said that South Africa is the 30th driest country in the world. Durbanites need to fight water loss, illegal connections and at the same time provide youngsters with skills to help resolve this issue.

Numerous interventions have been implemented to deal with the drought. These include ways of augmenting water supply using water tankers, educating consumers about ways to save water, installing flow limiters to reduce water demand, dealing with leaks and illegal water connections. In addition to this, the municipality engaged over 200 community teachers who conduct door-to-door education programmes.

Speaking at the launch of the #WarOnLeaks programme, deputy mayor, Cllr Fawzia Peer encouraged everyone to report water bursts and illegal water connections immediately, via the three main channels: Whatsapp- 073-148-3477, email- eservices@durban.gov.za and or by calling 080 13 13 013.

“We will continue with our door-to-door education on water conservation,” she said. The city is in full support of the programme and they also have a number of youth from the region who have been registered. In total, they have 64 pupils who are currently receiving training. Some students have been absorbed by our municipality through the Municipality Academy and are gaining a great work experience.
