Deputy mayor supports swimming gala

Deputy mayor, Cllr Fawzia Peer and other role-players enjoyed the gala.

The Bayview Swimming Club together with the Department of Sports and Recreation KZN hosted the Districts Primary Schools Swimming Gala in Chatsworth, recently.

About 500 swimmers from 25 schools and 300 parents were present at the gala. All pupils who participated were given lunch and a participation medal for their interest in the sport.

Schools which excelled at this competition despite not having a pool at their school, train once a week during the first term in the municipality’s schools development swimming programme held at the various area municipal pools.

Accolades went to Marainnridge, Merry Hill and Kamalinee Primary Schools for their excellent performance over the last three years of the gala.

This successful gala was honoured by the presence of the deputy mayor of eThekwini, Cllr Fawzia Peer who was impressed with the number of previously disadvantaged pupils who participated in the gala.

She addressed the pupils on the importance of participation in sports among the youth, so that they can keep away from drugs and alcohol abuse. She commended the parents, teachers and principals for their interest and support of the pupils to excel in sport.

She also commended the club for their initiative excellent organisation which also promotes water safety among the disadvantaged schools in the community. They encourage other disadvantaged schools to participate in 2018. For swimming coaching contact Prebha Pillay on 031 400-6817.
