JUST IN: Police officer killed in robbery shootout

A 37-year-old Brighton Beach SAPS officer was shot and killed at a robbery at a petrol garage in Edwin Swales Drive, south of Durban, last night.

Following the incident, KwaZulu-Natal’s acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa conveyed his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Cnst Thomas Kwela who was killed in the line of duty.

While chasing after them, it is alleged that a police officer was shot and killed. One suspect was arrested and will be charged with robbery and murder.

While the officers were at the crime scene, they found a 9mm pistol suspected to belong to one of the suspects. The police are still searching for the remaining suspects who are still at large after they fled the scene with cigarettes and cash that they stole from the garage.

Maj Gen Bheki Langa added, “We condemn this brutal killing of a young police officer who died while protecting the lives of our citizens. Those who kill our police officers are the worst of the worst. They made the biggest mistake of their lives by attacking members of the law. We will spare no resource to ensure that the outstanding suspects are traced and brought to book. It will be in their best interests to hand themselves over before our police officers pounce on them,” he said.
