Checkmate for local schools

Chess tournament a grand success.

Pupils from primary schools in Merebank and Wentworth participated in an annual chess tournament, recently.  The programme is supported by Wentworth SAPS, the Wentworth Victim Friendly and the Merewent CPF Centre and was sponsored by Mondi.  The tournament is their pro-active approach to getting youth to engage in positive activities.

The winner of the Wentworth Schools tournament was Nondumiso Zondi of Austerville Primary School and first place in the Merebank zone was Thiara Naidoo from Nizam Road Primary. The overall winner at the champions tournament was Bhongo Qobo.  Wentworth SAPS officer, W/O Ballan Reddi said that the tournaments were a huge success and the sport is growing in primary schools.

Collinwood Primary School principal, Mr Chand who is the coordinator said, “The level of competition was of an exceptional standard. I firmly believe that if correctly nurtured, there can be no reason why these pupils cannot go a long way in this exciting new venture. I also thank W/O Ballan Reddi and the committees for their unrelenting support in making these tournaments a huge success.”
