Business owner fakes robbery

A 39-year-old Bluff man was charged with defeating the ends of justice, after he falsely reported that his business had been robbed, recently.

Brighton Beach VISPOL members were summoned to attend to an alleged business robbery, which had occurred along Lighthouse Road. Upon arrival, the alleged victim said that three armed robbers had held him up.

According to the man, they forced him to open the cash register and gambling machines and then removed an amount of R50, 000. The man then stated that the robbers took a further amount of R40, 000 which he apparently had in his pocket. Police reports indicate that the man also claimed that R30, 000 worth of personal jewellery was taken.

The officers then interviewed witnesses near the scene, from which they established that nobody saw anyone entering or exiting the business premises, except for the owner himself.  The alleged crime scene was then processed as per crime scene management scene standards.

Brighton Beach officer, Cpt Sarel Kruger and Det W/O Marius Van Der Looy were searching the inner vicinity of the premises when they found a bank bag containing cash and coins stashed underneath a fridge as well as the alleged stolen PVR recorder and stolen jewellery.

The business owner then admitted to reporting a false complaint of business robbery.  He was charged with defeating the ends of justice and will make his second appearance in the Durban Regional Court on May 25.

Brighton Beach SAPS station commissioner, Col Carel Grobler praised all members involved for applying the appropriate crime scene management skills and interviewing techniques, which enabled them to confirm their suspicions.

“Those with criminal intentions should not underestimate the skills and competency levels of our police officials,” added Col Grobler.
