Alleged exorcists imprisoned for disembowelment of ‘possessed’ girl

Four alleged exorcists were convicted and sentenced to prison in the Durban High Court, recently. According to reports, Fundiswa Faku (30) and Lindelwa Jalubane (38) were both sentenced to life imprisonment while Nokubonga Jalubane (19) and Minenhle Jalubane (20) were sentenced to 12 years behind bars.

This conviction and sentencing follow a murder case which occurred on March 3, 2012. On the day of the incident, Sinethemba Dlamini (14) was attacked by the four for allegedly being possessed by demons.

Faku had arranged a special prayer meeting in order to exorcise demons out of the deceased. The accused removed the victim’s internal organs while she was still alive. The incident sparked outrage in Durban.

Following the successful convictions, KZN’s police commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said, “We are happy about the sentence handed down as this type of crime was rather unusual.” According to Lt Gen Ngobeni, a well prepared docket was presented to the court and this contributed to the conviction.
