What was expected to be a time of celebration and cheer turned into tragedy after a Welbedacht father was allegedly murdered at the hands of his teenage friend, during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Metres away from his home, Kreegan Pillay, 28, fell to the ground in front of his ten-year-old son, after he sustained a single stab wound to the right side of his body. His wife, Rebecca Moses, 29, and the couple’s two children, aged 10 and five, are battling to come to terms with his gruesome death.

Confirming the incident, communications officer of the Chatsworth SAPS, Lt Cheryl Pillay, said, “It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed after an argument with the accused. On Monday, January 4, Ivan Kistensamy (19) appeared before the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and was released on bail. The next court appearance is on February 20.”

Describing the ordeal as surreal, Moses said, “We were all celebrating on the road when we heard my husband scream. We then ran out and saw him fall to the ground. He was bleeding profusely. When we took him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

The family claims that their beloved family member was called to the lane a few metres from their home, where he was tear-gassed. “When he tried to escape, Ivan had pulled him back by his shirt and stabbed him. Watching their father die in front of them is something that will be etched in their minds forever. I am really angry and frustrated as the law does not seem to be in the favour of the slain victims and does not take any post traumatic facts regarding the deceased’s family into account when granting bail to the accused. We have to watch the man who killed Kreegan walk the streets and also have to deal with insults from his family,” said Moses.

Pillay was laid to rest on January 4. His family invites family and friends to his 40 day memorial service which will be held at the Arena Park Hall, on February 13, from 12pm to 3pm.
