Son sentenced for mum’s murder

The accused, Vassa Govender, was handed down a 10 and 15 year sentence, respectively, for murder and attempted murder.

A Crossmoor man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for murder and 15 years for four counts of attempted murder in the Durban Regional Court, recently.

Fifty-five-year-old Vassa Govender opened fire on his tenants after a feud on April 9, 2014. Govender also shot his 88-year-old mother, Annamma Govender, during the altercation. The shooting, occurred at Govender’s home on Seafern Road, after a fragmentary feud between the accused and his tenants.

Communications officer of Chatsworth SAPS, Lt Cheryl Pillay, said, “The sterling investigation conducted by D/W/O Robin Singh of Chatsworth SAPS has resulted in the successful conviction of the accused.”

Station commander, Brigadier Coenraad Marais, commended the investigators for the successful conviction of the perpetrator of the crime and the sentence meted out by the judicial system. “The complainants and witnesses in cases play a pivotal part in judicial proceedings and we commend the complainants for following through in cases. Together, we can ensure that criminals are removed from society and placed in correctional facilities. SAPS Chatsworth is committed towards ensuring that all cases reported to the police are dealt with efficiently and perpetrators of crime will be brought to justice,” he said.

It is alleged that the incident unfolded when Govender could not bear to tolerate his tenants’ continuous display of disrespectful behaviour, and following an argument, opened fire on the couple, shooting them both.

Speaking to the Rising Sun following the shooting last year, Govender’s sister, Charmaine Govender, said that her brother had been provoked. “The tenants continuously provoked, intimidated and harassed my brother. There was a fight between the couple that rented on our property. The man was beating up his girlfriend, using vulgar words and playing loud music which caused a disturbance to neighbours. When my brother approached him, the husband was drunk at the time and became furious. He caught my brother by the throat and pushed him against a wall in my yard and threatened him. The continuous harassment resulted in my brother taking action,” she added. Neville Jodash Moodley, 24, sustained a gunshot wound to his arm, while his girlfriend, Simone Subrayen, 20, sustained gunshot wounds to her arm and chest.
